Five of Pentacles Tarot Card Meaning: Upright, Reversed and Love

Here is what almost every reading of this pentacles tarot card leaves out. Look at where those two figures are walking. There is a lit window right beside them and neither one turns their head.

What the card actually shows

Five of Pentacles tarot card from the Rider Waite Smith deck, two figures in the snow passing a lit stained glass window
The Five of Pentacles. The window is lit, it is right beside them, and neither one looks at it.

Two figures move through deep snow. One walks on crutches with a bandaged foot and a bell hung at the neck, which in medieval Europe marked a leper, someone required to announce themselves as untouchable. The other is barefoot in a thin shawl, head down, arms wrapped around herself.

Above them and slightly behind runs a stained glass window, lit warm from inside, with five pentacles set into the glass. A church window. Shelter, warmth and available help, a few steps away.

Neither figure looks at it.

That is the architecture of the card and it is doing two jobs. It shows genuine hardship, physical hardship, material difficulties, the cold that comes with insufficient income. It also shows that the people inside the hardship have stopped seeing the exits. Those are different problems and this card holds both at the top of the card and the bottom.

Five of Pentacles upright meaning

In the upright position you are in a difficult period and the difficulty is material. Not a mood. Money, work, health, housing, the parts of the material world that keep a human being upright.

It shows up as job loss, a struggling business, insufficient income, bills arriving faster than money does. Financial strain that has lasted long enough to change how you sleep. Material loss that has eaten the buffer you used to have. A tough time by any measure, and the kind of financial struggle where basic needs start competing with each other.

The card is not fussy about scale. It covers financial ruin and it covers a single parent deciding between the heating and the shopping. Both are financial problems the Five recognizes, because what it tracks is the gap between your financial needs and what you have, not the size of the number.

It also shows up as health problems, because this card does not separate the two. Poor health drains money and money worries wreck health, and the Five sits in the middle of that loop. If you asked a health question, this is a flag to get the thing looked at rather than waiting it out.

The third layer is exclusion. Feelings of abandonment, being on the outside of something everyone else seems to be inside. Spiritual isolation rather than only an empty bank account. The card draws social outcast status and genuine hardship as the same picture, because historically they were.

Financial difficulties rarely stay in one box either. They leak into aspects of your life that have nothing to do with money, which is why this card so often turns up in readings that started as a question about something else entirely.

Here is the part worth holding on to. The Five follows the Four of Pentacles, where a man clutches everything he owns, and precedes the Six, where someone opens a hand. This is the low point of a sequence, not a permanent address. Every pentacles card in that run describes a different relationship with material wealth, and this one is the turning point where the old arrangement stops working.

Five of Pentacles reversed meaning

In the reversed position this card splits two ways, and the surrounding cards tell you which. In any tarot reading the difference matters more here than on most cards, because the two readings point in opposite directions.

Coming out of it. The most common reading, and a good card to see in this position. The difficult time is ending. A new job, a repayment, a diagnosis that turns out treatable, the light at the end of the tunnel. Financial recovery begins, slowly, financial security starts rebuilding, and positive changes show up across other areas of your life rather than only in the bank balance.

Finally asking. Reversed, the figures turn and see the window. You accept help from family members, apply for the social welfare you qualify for, tell someone the truth about your financial situation. Available resources were always there. Reaching for them is the shift.

Hardship becoming identity. The harder reading. The crisis passed and you kept the posture. Poverty consciousness, a scarcity mindset running long after the scarcity ended, survival mode as a personality. You still cannot spend forty euros on yourself without flinching. Your sense of self-worth got welded to a bad year.

That third version is why reversed is not automatically a good sign here. Sometimes it means the cold is outside you. Sometimes it means you carried it indoors.

Worth saying, because it gets lost in a lot of card meanings: difficult experiences leave inner resources behind as well as damage. People who have been through genuine hardship are frequently the steadiest ones in a crisis. That is a real part of the human experience and the Five earns it, even while it hurts.

Five of Pentacles in love and relationships

In a love reading, this card is rarely about romance going wrong on its own. It is about what financial stress does to two people. Money worries are one of the most reliable predictors of relationship strain, and the Five is that pressure sitting at the table every night.

It can also mean feeling shut out by a partner, or feeling like the one who always needs and never provides. If you have been the person apologizing for your circumstances inside your own relationship, this card has seen it.

If you are single, it often points at withdrawal. Not a lack of options, a lack of energy for them. Hard to meet anyone when you are in survival mode.

Reversed in a love reading is usually kinder. A new relationship after a rough patch, or two people finally talking about the thing they have both been avoiding.

Five of Pentacles in career and work

In career readings this is the bluntest card in the deck. Job loss, hours cut, a role that pays too little to live on, a business that is not working. Real effort going unrecognized. A challenging situation where there is little left in the tank by Friday.

It also describes the job you are afraid to leave because leaving means the cold. That is its own kind of trouble and the card counts it.

Reversed, a new job, reinstatement, or the moment you finally ask your manager for the raise you have earned. Hard work starting to register.

Five of Pentacles in money and finances

This is the card’s home ground and the reading is direct. Financial difficulty, financial loss, bad luck with timing, money going out faster than it comes in. Financial stress that has moved past inconvenience into fear.

In financial readings the practical advice is unglamorous. List what you actually owe. Find out what help you qualify for. Tell one person the real number. Those three steps are the window in the picture.

Reversed suggests financial stability returning, or at least the bleeding stopping. Not abundance yet. Just the end of the free fall, and the first sign that you are getting back to a good place.

Five of Pentacles in health

In a health reading the Five flags health issues that have been going on a while and have a material cost attached. Treatment you have been putting off. A condition made worse by stress, cold, or money.

Emotional well-being is included. Long financial hardship does measurable damage to mental health, and the card does not treat that as separate from the bandaged foot.

Reversed, recovery. Slower than you want, but moving.

Tarot does not diagnose anything. If something hurts, see a doctor rather than a deck.

Five of Pentacles yes or no

No, for now.

Not never. The Five is a snapshot of a low point, and low points move. If your question was about timing, the answer is that this is not the good time. If your question was about whether to ask for help, the answer flips to yes immediately.

Reversed, read it as a slow yes. The conditions are improving.

Five of Coins, the same card renamed

In Marseille decks, Thoth decks and many modern ones, this is the Five of Coins or the Five of Disks. Pentacles, Coins and Disks are three names for one suit, and the meaning does not change.

Thoth labels it Worry, which captures the mental half and drops the exclusion half. Some modern decks remove the church window entirely and show only two people in the cold. Those decks have taken out the most important thing in the picture, so if yours does that, remember the window anyway.

Different interpretations across tarot decks are normal. The suit, the number and the archetypal imagery carry the meaning. This is a minor arcana card, so it describes a passing set of difficult circumstances rather than the life-sized forces a major arcana card points at, and that distinction is genuinely comforting here.

The detail most readings miss: the window

Almost every version of this card meaning tells you the Five is about hardship. True, and incomplete.

The window is lit. It is close. It is behind them and to the side, which means they passed it. Rider Waite Smith did not put a church there as decoration. In the period the imagery draws on, the church was the actual social welfare system. Food, shelter, available help. The institution whose entire job was the people in this picture.

And the figures walk on.

You can read that two ways and both are true in different lives. Sometimes it is pride. You have decided that asking is worse than freezing, and your sense of value depends on never needing anyone. Sometimes it is exclusion that has been enforced so long you no longer try the door. The man with the bell was legally required to warn people away from him. He did not choose that.

So the question the card asks is not “are things bad”. You know they are. It is this: is there a window you are walking past, and which of those two reasons is keeping you outside it?

That is the only part of this card you have leverage over, which is exactly why it is the part worth looking at.

Card combinations

  • With the Six of Pentacles: the full arc. The cold, then the door opening. The cleanest pair in the suit.
  • With the Ace of Pentacles: a new financial opportunity arriving mid-crisis. Take it even if it is small.
  • With the Tower: sudden material loss rather than slow erosion. Different shape of hard times.
  • With the Star: the classic recovery pairing. Hope after depletion, and the Star directly follows this kind of night.
  • With the Four of Pentacles: scarcity on both sides. Clutching caused some of this.
  • With the Three of Cups: the support systems are right there. You have not called them.

Five of Pentacles in past, present and future positions

In a past position, a difficult experience that shaped how you handle money and security, probably more than you credit. Many people reading this card in the past position are still running software written during it.

In the present position it names the current situation plainly and asks what available help you have not used.

In a future position it is a warning rather than a sentence. Something in your financial matters is heading toward strain on the current trajectory. The future position of this card is the one most worth acting on, because it is the only one you can still change.

Questions about the Five of Pentacles

Is the Five of Pentacles a bad card?

It is a difficult card, not a bad omen. It describes hard times in the material world, usually money, work or health. What it is not is a verdict. It sits between the Four and the Six of Pentacles, which means it is the low point of a sequence that moves.

What does the Five of Pentacles mean in love?

Usually the pressure financial strain puts on a relationship rather than a problem with the relationship itself. It can also mean feeling excluded by a partner, or withdrawing because you have nothing left to give. Reversed it points at recovery and at two people finally talking.

Is the Five of Pentacles a yes or no card?

No, for now. The exception is a question about asking for support, where it becomes a clear yes. Reversed, read it as a slow yes.

What does the Five of Pentacles mean for money?

Financial difficulty, financial loss, insufficient income, money worries that have gone on long enough to affect your health. In financial readings it asks you to find out what help you qualify for rather than enduring quietly.

What does the Five of Pentacles reversed mean?

Most often recovery, or the moment you finally ask for help. Sometimes the opposite, where the hardship ended and the scarcity mindset stayed. Check the surrounding cards to tell which.

What is the stained glass window in the Five of Pentacles?

A lit church window with five pentacles set into it, directly beside the two figures in the snow. It represents shelter and available help a few steps away. The detail that matters is that neither figure looks at it.

Does the Five of Pentacles mean poverty?

It can mean literal material hardship, and it often does. It equally describes spiritual poverty, feeling worthless, or being outside a group you want to belong to. The card draws all of those as the same cold.

What is the astrology of the Five of Pentacles?

Mercury in Taurus, the first decan of Taurus, in the Golden Dawn system, which titled it Lord of Material Trouble. Mercury is restless and Taurus wants security, so the pairing describes worry circling a practical problem.

What does the Five of Pentacles say about career?

Job loss, underpayment, a struggling business, or work that is not recognized despite real effort. Reversed, a new job or the end of the difficult period.

What should I do when I get the Five of Pentacles?

Find the window. Name the real number, tell one person, and check what support you actually qualify for. Those are the three moves this card is pointing at, and all of them involve stopping and looking sideways.

The short version

The Five of Pentacles is the hard times card. Upright it means material hardship, financial strain, poor health or exclusion, usually several at once. Reversed it usually means recovery or finally asking for help, and occasionally means the scarcity outlasted the scarcity.

Yes or no: no, for now.

And the thing to keep: two people are walking through snow past a lit window and neither turns to look. Work out whether that is pride or exhaustion, because the answer changes what you do next.

Where to take this next

The fives in tarot are all disruption. Five of Cups is emotional loss, Five of Swords is conflict, Five of Wands is friction, and this one is material. Learn what each number does and you get most of a card before you look at the picture, which is the shortcut I cover in tarot suits explained.

If you are starting from the beginning, how to read tarot cards is the place to go.

And if this card landed close to home, be gentle with the reading. The Five describes a season, not a person.
