What Does a Reiki Practitioner Actually Do?

A Reiki practitioner channels universal life force energy — known as Ki in Japanese — to support healing, relaxation, and balance in their clients. During a session, the practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above the client’s body, allowing energy to flow where it is needed most.

Sessions typically last 45–90 minutes. The client remains fully clothed throughout. Most people describe feeling deep warmth, relaxation, and a sense of calm. Some report emotional releases, tingling sensations, or seeing colours — all normal responses to energy work.

Reiki practitioners work with individuals in one-to-one sessions, groups, online via distance healing, or as a complementary offering alongside other therapies such as massage, yoga, or counselling.

Do You Need a Reiki Qualification to Practise?

Reiki is not a regulated profession in most countries, meaning there is no legal requirement to hold a specific licence. However, completing a recognised Reiki Level 1 certification is strongly recommended for several reasons:

• It demonstrates you have received proper training and attunement from a qualified Reiki Master
• It is required by most professional Reiki associations if you want to join as a member
• It gives your clients confidence in your abilities
• Many insurance providers require a certificate before issuing professional liability cover

For informal practice — giving Reiki to yourself, family, and friends — a Level 1 certification is sufficient. For professional practice and teaching, most practitioners progress to Level 2 and eventually Master level.

Online vs In-Person Reiki Training: Which Is Better?

Both routes are valid, and the best choice depends on your learning style, budget, and location.

In-Person Training

Traditional Reiki training involves attending a workshop with a local Reiki Master, typically over one or two days. Benefits include hands-on practice, real-time feedback, and the experience of receiving your attunement in person. Cost is typically higher ($100–$500 for Level 1).

Online Training

Online Reiki courses have become widely accepted, particularly since 2020. You study the theory and practice through video lessons, and receive a distance attunement — which is just as effective as an in-person attunement, as confirmed by Reiki lineage history. Online training is significantly more affordable and can be completed at your own pace from anywhere in the world.

Note box: Are distance attunements effective? Yes. There is strong historical evidence for distance attunements — Reiki Master Hawayo Takata, one of the most respected figures in Reiki history, performed them herself. The ability to transmit energy across distance is fundamental to Reiki Level 2 teachings.

How Long Does It Take to Become a Reiki Practitioner?

You can complete Reiki Level 1 in as little as one to two weeks if studying online at your own pace. In-person Level 1 workshops are typically completed in one to two days.

Progressing through all three levels takes most practitioners six months to two years, depending on how much time they dedicate to practice between each level. Most experienced Reiki teachers recommend waiting at least 21 days between Level 1 and Level 2 — this gives time to integrate the energy changes from the Level 1 attunement.

What Qualifications Do You Need to Start?

None. Reiki can be learned by anyone, regardless of age, background, or prior spiritual experience. You do not need to meditate, hold any particular belief, or have any experience with energy work. The ability to channel Reiki energy is transmitted through the attunement process — it is not developed through years of practice.
