Reading an astrocartography map and interpreting one are two different skills. Reading tells you that a Venus line runs through Lisbon. Interpreting tells you what Venus on the Descendant will do to your relationships if you move there, how the Saturn line crossing it two hundred miles north changes the picture, and whether your relocated chart agrees. This guide teaches the second skill. If you have not yet made your map, start with my how to read your astrocartography map guide and the astrocartography lines meaning reference, then come back here with your map open.
What astrocartography interpretation means
Astrocartography, also called locational astrology or relocation astrology, is the branch of astrology developed by the American astrologer Jim Lewis in the 1970s. It takes the planetary positions from your natal chart and projects them onto a world map as planetary lines. Each line shows where on Earth a planet would have been on one of the four angles at the moment of your birth: rising on the Ascendant, setting on the Descendant, at the highest point on the Midheaven, or at the lowest point on the Imum Coeli. Live near a line and that planet becomes loud in your life there.
That is the reading part. Interpretation is weighing it. A line is never good or bad on its own. Jupiter lines are famous for luck and also for weight gain and overspending. Saturn lines are feared and also build careers that last. What a line does for you depends on five things: the planet, the angle, how that planet sits in your natal chart, what else crosses the line nearby, and what you actually want from the place.
The four angles change everything
Most interpretation mistakes come from reading the planet and ignoring the angle. The same planet on a different angle produces a different life.
AC line, the Ascendant
The planet colors you. Your identity, body, energy and the first impression you give. On a Sun line you feel seen. On a Mars line you have drive and a shorter temper. On a Neptune line you feel dreamy and less defined. AC lines change how you show up more than what happens to you.
DC line, the Descendant
The planet arrives through other people. Partners, close friends, clients, open enemies. A Venus DC line brings loving, attractive people into your life. A Pluto DC line brings intense, transformative and sometimes controlling ones. A Saturn DC line brings older or serious partners and slower commitments. If your goal is love or business partnership, read DC lines first.
MC line, the Midheaven
The planet shapes your public image, career, reputation and life direction. Sun and Jupiter MC lines are the classic career lines. Mercury MC favors writing, teaching and communication work. Uranus MC gives an unconventional public role and sudden changes of direction. Saturn MC gives slow, earned authority and heavy responsibility.
IC line, the Imum Coeli
The planet moves into your home, family, roots and inner life. Moon and Venus IC lines are the home lines, where people feel settled and nourished. Pluto IC digs up family patterns. Neptune IC is lovely for retreat and spiritual growth and poor for practical home building. Chiron IC can bring old family wounds to the surface for healing.
A five step interpretation method
Use this order every time and your interpretations will be consistent.
- Start with the goal, not the map. Write one sentence: I want this place to give me more of X. Career, love, home, creativity, healing, money, spiritual growth. The goal decides which planets and angles matter. Without it every map looks interesting and nothing is useful.
- Find the planets that rule that goal. Career: Sun, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury on the MC. Love: Venus and the Moon on the DC, with Jupiter as a bonus. Home: Moon and Venus on the IC. Creativity and spiritual growth: Neptune, Venus and the Moon, usually on the AC or IC. Money: Jupiter and Venus, and a well placed Saturn.
- Check the planet in your natal chart. A line only amplifies what the planet already is for you. If your natal Venus is in Scorpio square Pluto, your Venus DC line brings intense love, not easy love. If your Jupiter is strong and well aspected, the Jupiter line delivers more than it does for someone with a debilitated Jupiter. This step is what separates professional astrologers from calculator readers.
- Look at crossings and parans. Where two lines cross, both planets act at once and the crossing point is strong for a few hundred miles around. A Venus and Jupiter crossing is one of the happiest spots on any map. A Venus and Saturn crossing gives committed love that starts slowly. Parans are places where two planets are on angles at the same time, shown as horizontal latitude lines on advanced maps, and they affect the whole latitude band, not just one city.
- Confirm with the relocated chart. A relocation chart recasts your natal chart as if you had been born in the new location. The planets stay in their signs, but the houses and angles move. If the astrocartography line says career and the relocated chart puts Jupiter in your 10th house, the two agree and you can trust the read. If the relocated chart puts Saturn on the Ascendant and three planets in the 12th house, be cautious no matter how pretty the line looks.
Worked example: Jupiter MC in New York
A client born in Denver has her Jupiter MC line running through New York state, with Jupiter in Sagittarius in her natal 9th house, strong and well placed. Her goal is to grow a coaching business and be known for her work. Step two says Jupiter MC is the career line she wants. Step three says her Jupiter is one of the best planets in her chart, so the line will deliver. Step four shows a Mercury AC line crossing it near the city, which adds visibility through writing and speaking, and a Saturn DC line passing about 300 miles west, far enough to be faint. Step five, the relocated chart for New York, puts Jupiter conjunct the relocated Midheaven and the Sun in the 10th house. Everything agrees. The interpretation is a strong yes for career growth and public life, with a note that Jupiter MC also expands expenses and ego, so she should plan her budget and keep her feet on the ground. You can read the full picture of that line in my Jupiter line astrocartography post.
Interpretation by goal
| Your goal | Best lines | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Love and partnership | Venus DC, Moon DC, Jupiter DC, Sun DC | Saturn DC (slow, serious), Pluto DC (intense), Neptune DC (illusion) |
| Career and public image | Sun MC, Jupiter MC, Mercury MC, Saturn MC for lasting authority | Neptune MC (unclear direction), Uranus MC (instability), Mars MC (conflict at work) |
| Home and family | Moon IC, Venus IC, Jupiter IC | Pluto IC (upheaval), Uranus IC (constant moving), Saturn IC (heavy duties) |
| Spiritual growth and creativity | Neptune AC or IC, Venus AC, Moon AC, North Node lines | Neptune MC (career fog), Neptune DC (deceptive partners) |
| Money | Jupiter MC or IC, Venus MC, Saturn MC long term | Jupiter lines without Saturn nearby (overspending), Neptune lines (financial fog) |
| Health and vitality | Sun AC, Jupiter AC, Mars AC in moderation | Saturn AC (fatigue), Neptune AC (low immunity), Pluto AC (burnout) |
The challenging lines, interpreted fairly
Saturn lines bring hard work, delay, responsibility and reality. People avoid them, and people also build their life’s work on them. A Saturn MC in your thirties can be exactly the discipline a career needs. Pluto lines bring transformation, power struggles and endings. Good for therapy, rebirth and deep research, hard for peace. Mars lines bring energy, drive, accidents and arguments. Good for athletes, entrepreneurs and anyone who needs a push, hard for a quiet life. Chiron lines bring the wound to the surface, which is painful and also where healers do their best work. Neptune lines bring dreams, spirituality, creativity and confusion. Uranus lines bring freedom, change and instability. None of these are lines to avoid forever. They are lines to visit on purpose, with the right goal, for the right length of time.
Six common interpretation mistakes
- Using a rounded birth time. The MC and IC lines shift about one degree of longitude for every four minutes of birth time. A guessed time can move a line several hundred miles. Use your exact birth time from your birth certificate.
- Reading lines in isolation. Always check what crosses within a few hundred miles.
- Chasing Jupiter and Venus everywhere. Without a goal, the lucky lines give you a pleasant, aimless life.
- Ignoring the orb. A line’s effect is strongest within about 100 to 150 miles and fades out by around 300 to 400 miles. New York on your line does not mean Boston is.
- Forgetting the natal chart. The line amplifies the planet you have, not the planet in a textbook.
- Judging from one trip. Short visits show a flavor. Living somewhere for a year shows the real effect, and transits and solar returns color any single visit.
Free astrocartography tools
You can make a free astrocartography map at astro.com under the extended chart selection, at Astrocarto, and in several apps. All of them need your birth date, exact birth time and birth location. The free maps show the lines well. Most do not show parans or relocated charts clearly, and none of them interpret the lines against your natal chart, which is the part that matters. Use the free tools to find your candidates, then interpret them with the method above, or let me do it with you.
Get your map interpreted properly
In an Astrocartography Reading I take your exact birth data, map your lines, crossings and relocated charts for the places you are considering, and tell you what each one will bring for your career, love, home and spiritual growth. You leave with a shortlist and a plan, not a map full of colored lines.
Book an Astrocartography ReadingA reality check. Astrocartography is a tool for reflection and planning, not a guarantee. Visas, money, family, climate and work matter more than any line. Use the map to choose between places you could realistically live, and test a place with a visit before you move your life there.
Frequently asked questions
How do you interpret an astrocartography map?
Start with your goal, find the planets that rule it, check how those planets sit in your natal chart, look for lines and crossings near the places you are considering, then confirm with a relocated chart for that location. The planet tells you the theme, the angle tells you which area of life it affects.
What is the difference between reading and interpreting astrocartography?
Reading identifies which planetary line passes through a place. Interpreting weighs the planet, the angle, the natal condition of that planet, nearby crossings and parans, and your goal, to judge what living there would actually feel like.
How close do you need to be to an astrocartography line?
The effect is strongest within about 100 to 150 miles of a line and fades by roughly 300 to 400 miles. Crossings and parans can be felt across a wider area.
What is the best astrocartography line for career?
Sun MC and Jupiter MC lines are the strongest career lines for visibility and growth. Mercury MC suits communication careers and Saturn MC builds slow, lasting authority.
What is the best line for love in astrocartography?
Venus on the Descendant is the classic love line, followed by Moon DC, Jupiter DC and Sun DC. Check your natal Venus first, because the line amplifies the Venus you already have.
What is a relocation chart and do I need it?
A relocation chart recasts your natal chart for a new location, moving the houses and angles while the planets stay in their signs. It confirms or questions what the astrocartography lines suggest, so professional interpretations always include it.
Can astrocartography work without an exact birth time?
Not reliably. The MC and IC lines move about one degree of longitude for every four minutes of birth time, so a rounded time can shift a line by hundreds of miles. Find your birth certificate or have your chart rectified.
Know your natal chart first
Every line on your map is a planet in your birth chart. A Birth Chart Reading shows you how each planet works for you, which makes every astrocartography interpretation sharper.
