Best Crystals for Reiki: 12 Healing Stones and How to Use Them

You do not need stones to practise Reiki. Reiki works perfectly well on its own. But nearly every reiki practitioner I have taught picks up crystals eventually, and there is a good reason for that.

Crystals hold one steady frequency. Reiki energy moves and adapts. Put the two together and your session holds its shape for longer.

I have trained over 15,000 students, and the question I get most about crystal reiki healing is always the same. Which stones do I actually buy first, and where do I put them? So here are the twelve I use, what each one does, exactly where it goes on the body, and when to reach for it.

Why the use of crystals suits Reiki so well

Reiki channels universal life force through your hands. Mikao Usui described it in exactly those terms. The universal energy of reiki adapts to whoever receives it, which is what makes it gentle and safe for anyone.

Crystals work differently. Each type of stone carries its own natural properties of crystals and its own metaphysical properties, and those stay constant. Clear quartz behaves like clear quartz every single time.

So the crystal energy gives your reiki practice a container. You supply the flow of energy and the stone holds one quality in place. Most crystal healers describe this as helping clear blockages in the energy field so the energy flow keeps moving after your hands lift away.

That is the whole idea. Nothing mystical about the mechanics.

Think of it like this. Your hands supply the healing energy. The stone decides where that energy lingers. A client who arrives flat and a client who arrives wired need the same reiki but very different stones, and choosing well is most of the skill.

One rule before the list. A stone placed badly does nothing. A stone placed on the chakra points that actually need support changes how the session lands. Placement matters more than how much you spent.

The 12 best crystals for Reiki

Clear quartz

Clear quartz crystal point for Reiki, the master healer stone for the crown chakra

The master healer, and the one stone I would not run a session without. Clear quartz amplifies whatever you pair it with, which makes it the most useful of all reiki crystals. It does not add a quality of its own. It makes whatever is already happening louder.

Where to place it. A quartz crystal just above the head at the crown chakra lifts the entire treatment. Quartz points direct energy in a line, so turn the tip toward the body when you want to draw energy in, and away from the body when you want to draw something off. If you only own one stone, hold it in your receiving hand while you work.

When to reach for it. When a session feels flat and you cannot work out why. Because it amplifies everything, be careful pairing it with a stone whose effect you do not want magnified.

Rose quartz

Rose quartz tumbled stone for Reiki, the heart chakra crystal of unconditional love

The heart chakra stone, and the one clients react to most visibly. Rose quartz carries unconditional love, and in practice that means it softens grief and quiets self-criticism rather than energising anything.

Where to place it. Centre of the chest, flat on the breastbone, not off to one side. A tumbled piece sits better there than a point, because a point rolls off as the chest rises and falls.

When to reach for it. Bereavement, heartbreak, a client who apologises for taking up your time. Expect tears, and do not rush to fix them. If you buy one stone after clear quartz, buy this one.

Amethyst

Amethyst cluster for Reiki, a third eye and crown chakra crystal for spiritual awareness

Amethyst works on the upper chakras, the third eye chakra and the crown. It supports spiritual awareness and spiritual growth, and it is the stone I hand students who want to deepen intuition.

Where to place it. A small tumbled piece between the brows, or a cluster set on the floor just behind the head so the points face up and out. Clusters are too knobbly to rest on a face comfortably, so keep those off the body.

When to reach for it. Overthinking, a racing mind, poor sleep, or any session where the client says they cannot switch off. Send them home with it on the bedside table.

Black tourmaline

Black tourmaline rod for Reiki, a protective root chakra stone that absorbs negative energy

A protective stone, and the one that looks after you rather than the client. Black tourmaline absorbs negative energy, which matters when you give back to back reiki treatments and start to feel wrung out by the fourth one.

Where to place it. Two useful spots. On the body, at the soles of the feet, which grounds a client who runs anxious. In the room, one piece near the door and one under the head of the table. It does not need to touch anyone to do its job.

When to reach for it. Every day you see more than two clients. This is the stone to cleanse most often, because it is the one doing the dirty work.

Smoky quartz

Smoky quartz palm stone for Reiki, a grounding root chakra crystal

Grounding, and gentler about it than black tourmaline. Smoky quartz draws scattered energy back into the human body and settles the nervous system after deep work.

Where to place it. At the feet, or one in each hand for the last five minutes of the session. A flat palm stone is the shape you want here, because the client can hold it without gripping.

When to reach for it. The end of any session that went deep. If someone sits up glassy and unsteady, this is what brings them back before they drive home.

Red jasper

Red jasper tumbled stone for Reiki, a grounding root chakra crystal

Root chakra, and a great stone for stamina rather than calm. Red jasper works slowly. Clients rarely feel it during the session and often notice it the next day.

Where to place it. Low on the body, at the base of the spine if they are face down, or on the hip bones if they are face up. Never directly on the groin.

When to reach for it. Exhaustion, burnout, and clients who drift off mid session and need bringing back down into their legs.

Citrine

Citrine crystal point for Reiki, a solar plexus chakra stone for confidence

Solar plexus chakra. Citrine brings warmth and confidence back to people who have lost both, and it is the stone I use with clients going through a job loss or a divorce.

Where to place it. Just above the navel, in the soft hollow under the ribs. That is the solar plexus, not the stomach, and the difference is about two inches.

One honest note. Most citrine sold in a crystal shop is heat treated amethyst, which is why it looks orange and burnt at the base. Natural citrine is a pale smoky yellow all the way through and costs more. Both work if you believe they do, but you should know which you are buying.

Lapis lazuli

Lapis lazuli with gold pyrite flecks for Reiki, a throat chakra crystal for clear communication

Throat chakra. Lapis lazuli helps someone say the thing they have been swallowing for months. The gold flecks running through it are pyrite, and a stone with no flecks at all is usually dyed howlite.

Where to place it. In the notch at the base of the throat, not on the windpipe. Anything resting on a throat makes people tense, so if your client swallows repeatedly, move it to the collarbone instead.

When to reach for it. Anyone who talks around the problem for the first ten minutes. Also good before a difficult conversation they already know they have to have.

Blue lace agate

Blue lace agate banded stone for Reiki, a gentle throat chakra crystal

Also throat chakra, but far gentler. Where lapis pushes words out, blue lace agate calms the panic that stops them coming.

Where to place it. Same spot as lapis, at the base of the throat. It is usually a flat tumbled slice, which sits more comfortably on a neck than anything chunky.

When to reach for it. Anxious clients, children, and anyone who found lapis too intense last time. This is my default throat stone for a first session, because nothing about it is confronting.

Green aventurine

Green aventurine tumbled stone for Reiki, a heart chakra crystal

Heart chakra again, on the physical side rather than the emotional one. Rose quartz is for grief. Green aventurine is for recovery.

Where to place it. Chest, slightly right of centre, or paired with rose quartz so one sits high on the breastbone and one just below it.

When to reach for it. Someone rebuilding after illness, surgery or a long stretch of stress. It is a quiet stone and people often do not notice it, which is rather the point.

Tiger’s eye

Tigers eye banded stone for Reiki, a sacral and solar plexus chakra crystal

Sacral chakra and solar plexus chakra. Tiger’s eye steadies decision making, and it is the stone for people stuck between two options rather than people in distress.

Where to place it. Low belly, two inches below the navel for the sacral, or move it up under the ribs if the issue is confidence rather than creativity.

When to reach for it. Clients who say “I don’t know what I want” more than twice. Give them one to carry for the week rather than relying on the session alone.

Selenite

Selenite tower for Reiki, a crown chakra crystal used to cleanse other stones

Selenite is the housekeeper of the set. It cleanses your other stones and your own energy field between clients, which means you will use it more often than anything else here.

Where to place it. Above the crown, or swept slowly down the length of the body about six inches off the skin at the end of a treatment. A charging plate or flat bar near the table gives your other stones somewhere to sit between sessions.

Care warning, and this one matters. Selenite is a soft gypsum and it dissolves in water. Never rinse it, never leave it on a damp windowsill, and never put it in a water bottle. Dry cleansing only.

Twelve different stones, each with unique properties. You do not need all twelve to begin. Clear quartz, rose quartz, amethyst and black tourmaline will carry you a long way, and the other eight can wait until a client walks in who needs them.

How to incorporate crystals into a Reiki session

The easiest way is a chakra layout. Your client lies on the massage table and you place one stone at each of the seven energy centers, matching colour to chakra locations. Root at the base of the spine, crown above the head. Work down the chakra points in order rather than jumping around, because the body settles better that way. Then you give reiki exactly as you normally would. The stones stay put for the whole treatment.

This is a great way to start, because you learn what each stone does by feel rather than by reading about it.

Two practical points nobody mentions. Warm the stones in your hands first, because a cold stone on bare skin makes a relaxed client flinch. And tell the client what you are doing before you do it, so the first touch is not a surprise.

The second way is a crystal grid. You set stones in a geometric pattern under or around the table, then charge the grid with reiki before your client arrives. The grid holds the space for the entire session without you touching it again. A simple six around one works as well as anything complicated: six stones in a ring, one clear quartz in the middle.

The third way, and the simple way for daily use, is to hold one stone in your receiving hand while you give reiki to yourself. Add that to your daily routine and you will feel the difference inside a week.

You can also wear crystal jewelry, keep a stone in your pocket, or use crystal-infused water bottles. Treat these as different ways to stay connected between treatments rather than as replacements for a session. With water bottles, only use stones known to be safe in water, and use the indirect kind where the stone sits in a sealed chamber. Selenite, malachite and anything you cannot identify should never go in drinking water.

If you sit at reiki level 1, start with a single stone. At reiki master level you can run full grids and layer several different types of crystals in one treatment. The best way is whichever one you will actually do.

Either way, the healing process belongs to your client. The stones support it. They do not run it.

Cleansing and charging your Reiki stones

Crystals pick things up. After a heavy session, clear them.

Selenite, running water, or one night under the full moon all work well. Then charge them with reiki itself by holding each stone and drawing your symbols over it. This is the step most people skip, and it is the one that keeps your healing crystals working over a long time.

Skip water for selenite, and for anything soft, layered or flaky. When in doubt, use the selenite plate or a night on a windowsill instead. Cleansed stones carry positive energy back into your next treatment. Neglected ones do not.

A working rhythm that holds up: cleanse the protective stones weekly, cleanse everything monthly at the full moon, and cleanse anything immediately after a session that felt heavy.

What the science says about the healing powers of crystals

I want to be straight with you, because clients will ask.

There is no good scientific evidence that crystals treat disease. Medical doctors do not prescribe them. Research into the efficacy of crystal healing points to the placebo effect, and one well known study found people reported the same sensations from fake stones as from real ones.

That does not make crystals worthless. The placebo effect is real and measurable. Feeling cared for calms the nervous system, and a calm nervous system helps almost everything else.

Reiki and crystal therapy sit inside alternative medicine as a complementary therapy. They work alongside conventional care, never instead of it. Share the healing benefits you see, offer your knowledge for educational purposes, and never tell a client to stop their medication or claim you are repairing their immune system.

In recent years that boundary has become the clearest mark of a professional. Held properly, energy healing is a powerful tool for relaxation and intention and a great tool for helping people slow down.

Where to buy your Reiki crystals

Any crystal shop will do, online or in person. Hold the stone first if you can. Skip anything obviously dyed. A small honest piece beats a large treated one every time.

Three things worth knowing before you spend. Bright unnatural blue and pink tumbles are usually dyed howlite. Anything described as a made up trade name rather than a mineral name is often glass. And a stone sold in a bag of forty for the price of a coffee is not going to be what the label says.

The energy of the crystals matters less than whether you will reach for them. A tumbled stone you carry every day does more for your practice than a museum piece sitting on a shelf. Budget for four good stones rather than twelve cheap ones, and add to the collection as your work asks for it.

Start with two stones this week

Buy clear quartz and rose quartz. Place them at the crown chakra and the heart chakra in your next session and notice what shifts. That is the entire beginning, and it costs very little.

Crystals will not make you a better healer. Your hands and your attention do that. But they give your healing practice a structure that clients can see and feel, and that changes the healing experience for both of you.
