Root chakra healing is the practice of restoring your sense of safety, stability, and belonging by clearing and balancing the Muladhara, the first of your seven energy centers at the base of the spine. When your root chakra is balanced, you feel grounded, secure, and at home in your body. When it is blocked, life can feel precarious, anxious, and unsettled.
The root is your foundation, the energetic ground you stand on. Everything above it depends on this base being secure. Before you can love, create, or rise, you first need to feel that you belong here.

Signs your root chakra is blocked or out of balance
When this center is out of balance, you tend to feel it first in your mood and your relationships, then in the body.
Emotional and mental signs: Anxiety, restlessness, constant money or security worry, poor boundaries, feeling scattered, and feeling ungrounded.
Physical signs: Issues with the feet and legs, insomnia, lower-back pain, digestive trouble, low energy, and concerns with skin, hair, or bones.
When your root chakra is balanced
A balanced root chakra leaves you feeling grounded, secure, calm, resourced, present, and steady.
Blocked, underactive or overactive: the three kinds of root chakra imbalance
Most guides talk about a blocked root chakra as if there were only one way for it to go wrong. In practice a root chakra imbalance shows up in two opposite directions, and the healing is different for each, so it is worth knowing which one you are dealing with. Take the blocked chakra self check if you are not sure the root is the problem at all.
Blocked or underactive root chakra
This is the classic picture. Not enough earth energy is moving through the first chakra, and you feel unsafe even when nothing is wrong. Common root chakra imbalance symptoms on this side: anxiety that lives in the body, a constant background worry about money and basic needs, difficulty finishing things, feeling spacey or not quite in your body, cold hands and feet, low energy, a nervous system that startles easily, and trouble feeling at home anywhere. Physically it tends toward lower back pain, sciatica, leg and foot problems, constipation, and fatigue that sleep does not fix.
Overactive root chakra
Too much earth energy, held too tightly. An overactive root chakra looks like rigidity rather than fear: resistance to any change, hoarding and overeating, greed or obsession with financial security, aggression when you feel challenged, a short temper, workaholism, and a need to control your environment and the people in it. Physically it can show as weight gain around the hips and belly, tension in the lower body, high blood pressure and adrenal fatigue from living on alert. If this is you, the grounding practices below still help, and you will want the softer ones: gentle movement, breath, warm baths and time in nature rather than hard physical exercise and more structure.
What throws the root chakra out of balance
The root chakra forms in the first years of life, so early experiences of safety or its absence sit here: an unstable childhood home, loss, poverty, illness, or caregivers who were not able to be present. Later in life the root takes the hit from anything that threatens your survival or your place in the world: losing a job, financial stress, moving house or country, divorce, a health scare, an accident, or long periods of living in fight or flight. None of this means you are broken. The earth element is patient, and the root chakra responds to consistent, simple practices faster than any other energy center.
How to heal and balance your root chakra
You do not need anything you do not already have to begin. Choose one or two of the tools below and work with them gently this week.
Crystals
Red jasper, garnet, hematite, ruby, and red calcite. Placement matters with red jasper, so read red jasper chakra placement before you start.
Red jasper, smoky quartz and black tourmaline all do double duty in a Reiki treatment. Here are the 12 best crystals for Reiki and where each one goes on the body.
Essential oils
Cedarwood, ginger, cinnamon, rosemary, and patchouli.
Yoga and movement
Warrior I (Virabhadrasana) to build a strong, rooted base.
Breathwork
Slow belly breathing: inhale for four, hold for four, exhale for six, feeling the breath sink down through your seat.
Reiki hand position
Rest your hands over the tailbone and pelvic area, then over the soles of the feet.
Foods and tea
Root vegetables, protein, beetroot, and ginger. Sip ginger tea with a pinch of cayenne.
An everyday practice
Walk barefoot in nature, garden, or cook a slow, grounding meal. Once your root feels steady, move up to the heart chakra healing guide.
Root chakra healing methods, step by step
The quick list above is enough to start. If you want to go deeper, here are the eight root chakra healing practices I use with clients, with enough detail to do each one properly. Pick two and do them daily for two weeks before adding more. Consistency heals the root, variety does not.
1. Grounding and earthing
The simplest root chakra practice is contact with the earth element. Stand or walk barefoot on grass, sand or soil for ten minutes and feel the ground push back against your feet. If you cannot get outside, sit with both feet flat on the floor, press them down and picture roots growing from your soles into the ground, like the roots of a tree, deeper with every exhale. Gardening, hiking and even repotting a plant count. Do this first thing in the morning and the whole day feels steadier.
2. Root chakra yoga poses
Standing poses that build strength in the legs, feet and pelvic floor are the most effective yoga for the first chakra. Mountain pose, Tadasana, is the foundation: stand with feet hip width apart, spread the toes, lift the arches and feel the weight even across both feet while the spine rises. Hold for ten slow breaths. Tree pose, Vrksasana, teaches balance from the ground up, and wobbling is part of the lesson. Add Warrior I, Malasana or yogic squat to open the hips and pelvic floor, and Child’s pose to rest. Ten to fifteen minutes of slow standing poses with long holds does more for the root than a fast flow.
3. Red jasper and black tourmaline
Two root chakra stones do most of the work. Red jasper is the nurturing stone of the first chakra, warm, steady and endurance building, and it is the one to carry if you feel depleted and unsafe. Black tourmaline is the protective stone, absorbing and grounding scattered, anxious energy, and the one to keep near you if you feel overwhelmed by other people or your environment. Hold one in each hand during meditation, lie down and place red jasper at the base of the spine or between the thighs for ten minutes, or keep black tourmaline in your pocket or by the front door. Hematite, garnet and smoky quartz are good alternatives. My guide to chakra colors and stones covers how to choose and cleanse them, and crystals for stress and anxiety goes deeper into the calming stones.
4. Red foods and root vegetables
The root chakra responds to food that grows in the earth and food that is red. Root vegetables are the obvious ones: sweet potatoes, beets, carrots, parsnips, turnips, radishes and onions, ideally roasted or slow cooked. Add red foods such as tomatoes, strawberries, red apples, pomegranate and red beans, protein for grounding, and warming spices like ginger, cayenne, paprika and cinnamon. Eat sitting down, slowly, and notice the weight of the food in your body. A warm, grounding meal is a root chakra practice in itself.
5. The seed mantra LAM and 396 Hz
Every chakra has a seed sound, and the root’s is LAM, pronounced with a long, resonant mmm that you can feel in the base of the spine. Sit tall, inhale, and chant LAM on a slow exhale, nine times or for three minutes, feeling the vibration drop downward. Many people pair this with 396 Hz solfeggio music, the frequency traditionally linked to the root chakra and to releasing fear and guilt. Play it while you work or sleep if chanting feels strange at first.
6. A five minute root chakra meditation
Sit or lie down with your feet or sit bones firmly on the ground. Take three deep breaths, lengthening each exhale. Bring your attention to the base of your spine and picture a warm red light there, the size of a fist, glowing like coals. With each inhale the light grows brighter. With each exhale it sends roots down through your seat, through the floor, into the earth. Silently repeat: I am safe. I am here. I have everything I need. Stay for five minutes, then press your feet into the floor and open your eyes slowly. Done daily, this is the single most effective root chakra healing practice I know.
7. Reiki and energy healing
Reiki works directly on the energy center without you having to do anything but receive, which is why it suits people who find it hard to settle on their own. In a session the practitioner holds hands over the base of the spine, the hips, the knees and the soles of the feet, and most clients feel heat and heaviness in the lower body as the root responds. You can give yourself Reiki in the same positions if you are attuned, or book a live chakra balancing session with me over Zoom and let someone else hold the space.
8. Support your nervous system
The root chakra and the nervous system tell the same story in two languages. A root that feels unsafe is a body stuck in fight, flight or freeze, so anything that signals safety to the body heals the root: regular meals and sleep, routine, slow exhales, warmth, weight such as a heavy blanket, physical exercise that ends in rest, and safe, steady people. If your root chakra symptoms come from trauma, pair the energy work with a trauma informed therapist. Chakra healing supports that work beautifully and does not replace it.
How long does root chakra healing take?
Most people feel calmer within the first week of daily grounding and notice real change in their sense of security after four to six weeks. A root that has been out of balance since childhood takes longer, and the pattern tends to return under stress, which is normal. The goal is not a root chakra that never wobbles. The goal is knowing how to bring yourself back to the ground in minutes.

Root chakra FAQ
What are the signs of a blocked root chakra?
A blocked root chakra often shows up as anxiety, constant worry about money or safety, restlessness, poor boundaries, and feeling ungrounded or disconnected from your body. Physically it can appear as lower-back pain, leg and foot issues, fatigue, or digestive trouble.
How do you heal the root chakra?
Begin by grounding the body: walk barefoot, practice slow belly breathing, and use grounding crystals like red jasper or hematite. Work with red foods and root vegetables, repeat root chakra affirmations, and hold steady standing poses such as Warrior I. The free workbook gives you a full page-by-page practice.
What color and element is the root chakra?
The root chakra is associated with the color red and the element of earth. Its seed mantra is LAM and its sound frequency is 396 Hz.
What is the difference between a blocked and an overactive root chakra?
A blocked or underactive root chakra feels like fear, anxiety, low energy and not being at home in your body. An overactive root chakra feels like rigidity, control, greed, aggression and resistance to change. Both respond to grounding, but the overactive root needs softer, slower practices.
Where is the root chakra located?
The root chakra, Muladhara, sits at the base of the spine, around the perineum and tailbone, and governs the legs, feet, hips, lower back, bones and adrenal glands. It is the first of the seven main chakras and the foundation of the whole system.
What is the fastest way to open the root chakra?
Stand barefoot on the ground, press your feet down, breathe out slowly and chant LAM or repeat I am safe for three minutes. For a lasting result, repeat a short grounding practice every day for at least four weeks.
Is the root chakra connected to money?
Yes. The root chakra governs survival and basic needs, so financial security, housing and work sit here. Constant money worry is one of the most common root chakra imbalance symptoms, and grounding practices often ease financial anxiety even before circumstances change.
