Seven chakra stones laid out in a vertical row on cream linen in rainbow order from red jasper to clear quartz

Chakra Colors and Stones: The Complete Chart for All 7 Chakras

Seven chakras, seven colors, and a crystal shop full of stones that all claim to help. This is the chart I wish I had when I started. It matches every chakra to its color, its location, what it governs and the stones that work for it, so you can pick the right crystal in under a minute. Below the chart I walk through each chakra in detail, root to crown, and show you how to put the stones on your body in a way that actually moves energy. Everything here is what I teach in Crystal Reiki, simplified for home use.

Why chakra colors matter for choosing crystals

The word chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning wheel. The chakra system describes seven main energy centers running from the base of the spine to the top of the head, each spinning at its own frequency. Light at different frequencies shows up as different colors, which is why each chakra has a color: red at the slowest, densest root, violet at the fastest, lightest crown. The colors are not decoration. They are a map of the frequency each chakra holds.

Crystals carry stable frequencies too, and color is the simplest clue to which chakra a stone resonates with. A red stone supports the first chakra. A green stone supports the fourth. This color correspondence is why a beginner can walk into a crystal shop with this chart and choose well. There are exceptions, which I note below, but the color rule gets you right about ninety percent of the time.

One more thing before the detail: stones do not fix a chakra on their own. They support a practice. If you want to know which chakra actually needs work, take the free chakra quiz or read how to know which chakra is blocked, then come back to this chart.

The seven chakras, their colors and their stones

Root chakra: red

The first chakra sits at the base of the spine and holds your survival instincts, your sense of safety, your basic needs and your relationship with the material world. When it is balanced you feel steady and at home in your body. When it is blocked you feel anxious about money, restless, ungrounded, and the lower back and legs often ache. Its color is red, the color of blood and earth.

Root chakra stones: red jasper is the classic, warm and steady. Black tourmaline and smoky quartz are the grounding and protective pair, and black counts as a root color because it is the densest. Garnet brings energy and passion. Hematite and black onyx anchor you fast when you feel scattered. Place a root stone at the base of the spine or between the feet when lying down, or keep one in your pocket. Read the full root chakra healing guide and my note on red jasper placement.

Sacral chakra: orange

The second chakra sits in the lower abdomen, two fingers below the navel, and governs creative energy, pleasure, emotions and sexuality. Balanced, you feel alive and able to enjoy yourself. Blocked, you feel flat, guilty about pleasure, creatively stuck, and the hips and reproductive organs hold tension. Its color is orange, warm and flowing like water at sunset.

Sacral chakra stones: carnelian is the one to start with, orange and glowing. Orange calcite is softer and good for emotional release. Sunstone brings joy. Moonstone is the exception to the color rule here: it is white or peach but it rules the sacral chakra through its link to cycles and the feminine. Tiger’s eye sits between the sacral and solar plexus. Place the stone on the lower abdomen. Full guide: sacral chakra healing.

Solar plexus chakra: yellow

The third chakra sits in the upper abdomen, between the navel and the breastbone. It is your personal power, confidence, willpower and sense of self. Balanced, you make decisions and hold boundaries. Blocked, you people please, doubt yourself, and digestion suffers. Its color is yellow, like the sun it is named after (Manipura means city of jewels, and the sun is the jewel).

Solar plexus stones: citrine is the stone of confidence and abundance. Yellow jasper steadies. Tiger’s eye gives courage. Pyrite, which is gold rather than yellow, brings willpower and protection and is one of the most effective solar plexus stones despite not being strictly yellow. Yellow calcite is gentle for beginners. Place the stone on the upper abdomen. Full guide: solar plexus chakra healing.

Heart chakra: green and pink

The fourth chakra sits at the center of the chest and is the bridge between the lower chakras and the upper ones. It governs love, compassion, forgiveness and emotional balance. Balanced, you give and receive love freely. Blocked, you carry grief, jealousy or emotional numbness, and the chest feels tight. Its main color is green, and pink is its secondary color, which is why both green and pink stones work on the heart.

Heart chakra stones: green aventurine for new beginnings, rose quartz for unconditional love and self love, green jade for harmony, rhodonite for forgiveness, malachite for deep transformation, emerald for loyalty. Place the stone on the center of the chest. I cover all twelve heart stones in crystals for the heart chakra, and the practice side in heart chakra healing.

Throat chakra: blue

The fifth chakra sits at the throat and governs communication, truth and self expression. Balanced, you say what you mean kindly. Blocked, you swallow your words or talk over people, and sore throats, neck stiffness and thyroid issues show up. Its color is light blue, the color of a clear sky.

Throat chakra stones: blue lace agate is the gentlest and best for nervous speakers. Sodalite supports clear, logical communication. Aquamarine soothes. Turquoise has been a throat stone across cultures for thousands of years. Blue apatite helps when you need to speak up at work. Place the stone at the base of the throat or wear it as a short pendant. Full guide: throat chakra healing and crystals for throat chakra healing.

Third eye chakra: indigo

The sixth chakra sits between the brows and governs intuition, inner wisdom, insight and imagination. It is linked to the pineal gland. Balanced, you trust your gut and see the bigger picture. Blocked, you overthink, ignore intuition and get headaches. Its color is indigo, the deep blue purple of the night sky.

Third eye stones: lapis lazuli is the traditional third eye stone, deep blue with gold flecks. Amethyst covers both the third eye and the crown. Labradorite, which flashes blue and gold, is the stone of intuition and a favourite of mine (see what chakra is labradorite). Sodalite and blue sapphire also work. Place the stone on the forehead between the brows while lying down. Full guide: third eye chakra healing.

Crown chakra: violet or white

The seventh chakra sits at the top of the head and is your connection to spirit, higher consciousness and the sense that you belong to something bigger. It is linked to the pituitary gland. Balanced, you feel at peace and connected. Blocked, you feel cynical, alone and spiritually empty. Its color is violet, and white or clear is also used because the crown holds all colors at once.

Crown chakra stones: clear quartz is the master healer and amplifies every other stone. Amethyst is the violet choice. Selenite cleanses the crown and the whole energy body. Howlite and lepidolite calm an overactive crown. Place the stone just above the top of the head when lying down, or hold it during meditation. Full guide: crown chakra healing, and if you feel spacey rather than blocked, read symptoms of an overactive crown chakra.

How to use chakra stones: the 7 stone layout

This is the simplest full chakra layout, the one I teach first. You need one stone per chakra from the chart, a quiet room and fifteen minutes.

  1. Cleanse the stones. Smoke, moonlight or a selenite plate the night before. Water is fine for quartz, aventurine, jasper and tourmaline, but keep selenite, calcite and malachite dry.
  2. Lie on your back. A yoga mat or your bed. Loose clothing. Phone on silent.
  3. Place the stones root to crown. Root stone between the feet or at the top of the thighs, sacral stone on the lower abdomen, solar plexus stone on the upper abdomen, heart stone on the center of the chest, throat stone at the base of the throat, third eye stone on the forehead, crown stone on the mat just above your head.
  4. Breathe into each chakra. Start at the root. Breathe in for four counts, picture the chakra color glowing under the stone, breathe out for six. Three breaths per chakra, then move up.
  5. Rest. Five minutes with all seven stones in place. Notice which one feels warm, heavy or buzzing. That is the chakra to work on this week.
  6. Close down. Remove the stones crown to root, sit up slowly, drink water. Cleanse the stones again.

The guided healing meditations walk you through this with my voice if you prefer not to count breaths yourself. And if you want it done for you, the live chakra balancing session is this layout plus Reiki, over Zoom.

Other ways to use the chart

  • Wear the color. If you cannot get the stone, wear the color. A yellow scarf on a day you need confidence is real chakra work.
  • Chakra bracelets. One stone per chakra on a single bracelet, in rainbow order. Full guide in what chakra bracelets do.
  • Single stone focus. Carry one stone for the chakra that needs the most work for two weeks, then retake the quiz.
  • Meditation. Hold the stone and picture its color at the chakra point. Ten minutes.
  • Crystal grids. Clear quartz in the center, the seven chakra stones around it. Set it where you see it daily.
  • Reiki. Run Reiki through the stones during the layout. The free Reiki Level 1 course teaches you the hand positions in a weekend.

Exceptions to the color rule

A few stones ignore the color code and work on chakras you would not guess. Moonstone (white) rules the sacral. Pyrite (gold) rules the solar plexus. Rose quartz (pink) rules the heart. Labradorite (grey with blue flashes) rules the third eye. Black stones rule the root. Clear stones rule the crown but also amplify everything. When in doubt, go with the color. When a stone keeps calling you for a different chakra, trust that too.

A seven stone starter kit (and what it costs)

You do not need a shelf of crystals. One tumbled stone per chakra, each about the size of a thumbnail, is enough for the full layout and for daily carrying. Here is the kit I recommend to every new student, chosen for price, availability and gentleness: red jasper for the root, carnelian for the sacral, citrine for the solar plexus (ask for natural citrine, much of the bright yellow stone sold cheaply is heat treated amethyst, which still works but is not the same), green aventurine for the heart, blue lace agate for the throat, amethyst for the third eye and clear quartz for the crown. Buying them as individual tumbles from a shop that names each stone usually costs less than a pre packed chakra set, and you get to hold each one before you choose it. Natural stones vary in color and have small flaws. Perfectly uniform, glassy beads are usually dyed or synthetic.

Keep the kit in a small pouch and cleanse it weekly. Add stones later for the chakra that keeps showing up in your quiz results. Most of my students end up with three or four extra heart or root stones, because those are the two chakras modern life hits hardest.

Frequently asked questions

What are the 7 chakra colors in order?

Root red, sacral orange, solar plexus yellow, heart green, throat blue, third eye indigo, crown violet or white. They follow the rainbow from the base of the spine to the top of the head.

What stone goes with each chakra?

Root red jasper or black tourmaline, sacral carnelian, solar plexus citrine, heart green aventurine or rose quartz, throat blue lace agate, third eye lapis lazuli or amethyst, crown clear quartz. These are the most common choices and the ones used on most chakra bracelets.

Do chakra stones have to match the chakra color?

Mostly yes, and color is the easiest way to choose. A few stones are exceptions, such as moonstone for the sacral, pyrite for the solar plexus and rose quartz for the heart.

Where do you place chakra stones on the body?

Root stone between the feet or at the top of the thighs, sacral on the lower abdomen, solar plexus on the upper abdomen, heart on the center of the chest, throat at the base of the throat, third eye on the forehead, crown just above the head.

Which chakra stone should I start with?

The root. Energy moves upward through the chakras, so a grounded root makes every other stone work better. Red jasper or black tourmaline in your pocket is the simplest start. Then take a chakra quiz to find which chakra needs the most work.

Can I use one stone for all chakras?

Clear quartz works on all seven because it holds every color. It is the one stone to buy if you only buy one.
