Each chakra sits at a specific point on the body. When one is blocked, the signs cluster around that point.

What a blocked chakra actually is

The word chakra is Sanskrit for wheel. Your chakra system is made of seven main chakras, seven wheels of energy that run from the base of the spine to the top of the head. Life force energy (prana, ki, chi, pick your tradition) moves through them. When the flow of energy is smooth, you feel grounded, open and clear. When one wheel slows down or gets stuck, you get a chakra blockage.

A blocked chakra does not stay in the energy body. It leaks into the physical body and into your mental health. Each chakra point governs a set of organs, a part of the nervous system and a cluster of emotions. So a block in the throat chakra shows up as sore throats and swallowed words. A block at the base of the spine shows up as money fear and lower back pain. Once you learn the map, the signs of a blocked chakra are hard to miss.

Good news: chakras are rarely blocked for good. They are more like a kinked hose. Find the kink, release it, and the water runs again.

How to tell which chakra is blocked: a 3 step self test

You can do this in ten minutes with a notebook. It works because chakra imbalance shows up on three layers at once: body, emotion and life pattern. When all three point at the same chakra, you have your answer.

Step 1: scan the physical body

Sit or lie down. Take five deep breaths. Then move your attention slowly from the base of the spine to the top of the head. Pause at each chakra point for a few breaths. Where do you feel heat, tightness, numbness or pain? Write down every sensation and where it sits. Do not interpret yet.

Step 2: name the emotional pattern

Look at the last two weeks. Which feeling kept coming back? Fear and money stress point to the root. Guilt and flatness point to the sacral chakra. Shame and feeling small point to the solar plexus. Grief points to the heart. Frustration at not being heard points to the throat. Confusion and lack of intuition point to the third eye. Disconnection and cynicism point to the crown.

Step 3: look at the life pattern

Blocks repeat. Ask yourself which area of life keeps breaking: money and housing, relationships and pleasure, work and confidence, love and connection, communication, decisions and direction, or faith and meaning. Match the answer to the chart above.

Read your results: if all three steps land on one chakra, that is your dominant block. If they land on two neighbouring chakras (root and sacral, say) the lower one is usually the cause and the upper one is the symptom. Start healing from the bottom up.

The signs of each blocked chakra in detail

Here is what each block looks like from the inside, plus the one thing I ask my Reiki students to try first. Each heading links to a full healing guide for that chakra.

Signs of a blocked root chakra

The first chakra, Muladhara, sits at the base of the spine and runs your survival instincts. When it is blocked you feel unsafe even when nothing is wrong. You worry about rent, food, your job. You cannot sit still, or you cannot get off the couch. Physically it shows as lower back pain, sciatica, cold hands and feet, constipation and adrenal fatigue, because the fight or flight response never switches off. Start here if you have moved house, changed jobs or lost income recently. First thing to try: walk barefoot on grass for ten minutes and eat root vegetables this week. Full guide: how to heal your root chakra, and red jasper placement for grounding.

Signs of a blocked sacral chakra

The sacral chakra sits in the lower abdomen, two fingers below the navel, and governs pleasure, creativity and the reproductive organs. A blocked sacral chakra feels like emotional numbness. You stop wanting things. Creative blocks drag on for months. Low libido, painful periods, urinary problems and tight hips are the physical imbalances. Guilt is the emotional signature, especially guilt about enjoying yourself. First thing to try: dance in your kitchen to one song, badly, with nobody watching. Full guide: sacral chakra healing.

Signs of a blocked solar plexus chakra

Your personal power lives in the upper abdomen. When the solar plexus chakra is blocked you say yes when you mean no, apologise for existing and feel like a fraud at work. Low self-esteem is the headline sign. In the body it shows as digestive discomfort, bloating, ulcers and that heavy, tired feeling after eating. First thing to try: make one small decision today without asking anyone’s opinion. Full guide: solar plexus chakra healing.

Signs of a blocked heart chakra

A blocked heart chakra is the one most people recognise. Grief that will not move. Jealousy. Emotional withdrawal from the people who love you. Keeping score. Physically the chest feels tight, breathing stays shallow and circulation suffers. Many of my students find this block after a breakup or a loss, and it often sits on top of an older root block. First thing to try: put a hand on the center of your chest and breathe into it for two minutes. Full guide: heart chakra healing.

Signs of a blocked throat chakra

The throat chakra is about truth. Blocked, you swallow your words, agree with things you do not believe, or swing the other way and talk over everyone. The physical symptoms are the clearest of any chakra: recurring sore throats, hoarseness, neck and shoulder stiffness, jaw clenching and thyroid issues. First thing to try: hum for one minute. The vibration sits right on the chakra point. Full guide: throat chakra healing and the best crystals for the throat chakra.

Signs of a blocked third eye chakra

The third eye sits between the brows and runs intuition and inner guidance. When it is blocked you overthink every decision, ignore gut feelings, and feel a lack of purpose. Headaches, eye strain, sinus pressure and vivid nightmares are the physical signs. Too much screen time and too little quiet make this worse. First thing to try: sit in silence for five minutes with your eyes closed and ask one question. Do not force an answer. Full guide: third eye chakra healing.

Signs of a blocked crown chakra

The crown chakra at the top of the head is your connection to something bigger. Blocked, you feel alone in a crowded room, cynical about everything spiritual and tired in a way sleep does not fix. Migraines and light sensitivity are common. An overactive crown looks different, more like spiritual bypassing and living in the clouds, and I cover that in symptoms of an overactive crown chakra. First thing to try: five minutes of gratitude, written down. Full guide: crown chakra healing.

Can more than one chakra be blocked at the same time?

Yes, and it is the norm rather than the exception. Energy moves upward through the chakra system, so a block low down starves everything above it. A root block often creates a heart block, because you cannot open to love while your nervous system thinks you are in danger. A sacral block often shows up as a throat block, because you cannot express what you will not let yourself feel.

That is why I always say heal from the bottom up. If your self test shows two or three blocked chakras, start with the lowest one. In my experience with over 15,000 Reiki students, clearing the root alone resolves about half of the “upper” symptoms within a few weeks.

How to start unblocking a chakra today

You do not need a retreat or a crystal collection. You need a few minutes a day aimed at the right chakra point. These are the methods I teach, roughly in order of how fast people feel them.

  1. Chakra meditation. Sit, breathe, and picture the color of the blocked chakra glowing at its location: red at the base of the spine, orange in the lower abdomen, yellow at the solar plexus, green at the heart, blue at the throat, indigo at the third eye, violet or white at the top of the head. Ten minutes. The guided healing meditations walk you through each one.
  2. Breathwork. Slow breathing calms the nervous system, which is the fastest way to release a root or solar plexus block. Four counts in, six counts out, for three minutes.
  3. Yoga poses. Each chakra has poses that open it: mountain and warrior for the root, hip openers for the sacral, boat for the solar plexus, camel and bridge for the heart, shoulder stand and fish for the throat, child’s pose for the third eye, headstand or simply lotus for the crown.
  4. Crystals. The healing benefits of crystals come from placing the corresponding crystal on the chakra point while you rest: red jasper or smoky quartz for the root, carnelian for the sacral, citrine for the solar plexus, rose quartz for the heart, blue lace agate for the throat, amethyst for the third eye, clear quartz for the crown. My chakra meaning chart lists more options.
  5. Essential oils. Vetiver and cedarwood ground the root. Ylang ylang opens the sacral. Lemon and ginger fire up the solar plexus. Rose opens the heart. Eucalyptus clears the throat. Frankincense and lavender support the third eye and crown.
  6. Affirmations. One sentence that contradicts the block. “I am safe” for the root. “I deserve pleasure” for the sacral. “I speak my truth” for the throat. Say it while you place a hand on the chakra point.
  7. Reiki. Reiki moves life force energy directly through the energy body, which is why I built my whole practice on it. You can learn to do it on yourself in a weekend with the free Reiki Level 1 course, or book a live chakra balancing session with me on Zoom if you want it done for you.

Pick one method and one chakra. Do it daily for two weeks before you judge it. Then retake the test. Most people see their dominant block shift noticeably in that time, and the healing journey gets easier from there.

Frequently asked questions

How do you know which chakra is blocked?

Match your physical symptoms, your repeating emotion and the area of life that keeps breaking against the location of each chakra. If all three point to the same chakra, that is the blocked one. A free chakra test can do the matching for you.

What does a blocked chakra feel like?

Physically it feels like tension, pain or numbness at the chakra point, for example a tight throat or a heavy lower abdomen. Emotionally it feels like being stuck in one feeling, such as fear, guilt, shame or grief, with no obvious cause.

Which chakra is most commonly blocked?

The root chakra. Modern life keeps the nervous system in low grade alarm about money, work and safety, which slows the first chakra. Because energy moves upward, a root block then affects the heart and throat too.

Can a blocked chakra cause physical symptoms?

Yes. Each chakra is linked to glands and organs, so a long term block tends to show up as physical issues in that area: thyroid issues for the throat, digestive discomfort for the solar plexus, lower back pain for the root. Always see a doctor for persistent symptoms, and treat chakra work as support alongside medical care.

How long does it take to unblock a chakra?

Most people feel a shift within two weeks of daily practice. Deep or old blocks can take a few months. Consistency matters more than intensity.

Is there a free test to find my blocked chakra?

Yes. The Blissful Careers chakra quiz is free, takes two minutes and gives you an instant result with a healing plan.
