Quick answer: Reiki helps with anxiety, stress and old emotional wounds by switching the body out of fight-or-flight and into its relaxation response. It does not erase what happened, and it is not a substitute for therapy, but as a daily self-practice and alongside professional care it can ease the heaviness, calm the nervous system and help you feel lighter around difficult memories.
How Reiki Calms Anxiety and Stress
Anxiety lives in the body as much as the mind: a racing heart, shallow breath, a nervous system stuck on alert. Reiki meets it at that level. The still, warm touch of a session signals safety to the body, breathing slows, and most people drop into deep relaxation within minutes. With regular practice the baseline shifts: the nervous system learns the way back to calm and finds it faster each time.
A 5-Minute Self-Reiki Practice for Anxious Moments
- Sit or lie down and take three slow breaths.
- Place one hand on your heart, one on your solar plexus (just below the ribs).
- Let the hands rest there for two to three minutes. Nothing to force, just warmth and attention.
- Move both hands to your belly for another minute.
- Finish with a slow breath and notice the difference.
If you are attuned to Reiki, the energy flows with intention. If you are not yet, this is still a soothing practice, and my free Reiki Level 1 course teaches the full method with an attunement included.
Healing Old Wounds: Sending Reiki to the Past
So how to heal trauma with Reiki? As a Reiki student you will have learnt that it is possible to send Reiki into the past. While Reiki will not be able to make the things that happened undone, Reiki does have the ability to shift the way you feel about it. The universal life force can sever the energy attachments that keep you stuck in the past. Once the energy attachements are severed, you can move on with confidence feeling much lighter. Whatever emotional barrier or difficulty you are dealing with right now, Reiki may help you let go, and perhaps even stop caring. Other times, it will help you understand the issue much better and see it from a whole other perspective. Regardless of the outcome of sending Reiki to the past, the negative energy will be gone. And after the negativity has dissipated, there is more space in your heart for positive new experiences. Here is a quick step by step guide on how to to heal trauma with Reiki:

Reiki is a complement, never a replacement. If anxiety or trauma is interfering with your life, please work with a therapist or doctor, and let Reiki be the gentle daily support alongside that care. Many of my students use it exactly this way, and it is also how hospitals that offer Reiki position it. For more self-practice, see Reiki healing on yourself and meditation for Reiki.

Most people feel calmer within a single session, often within minutes of the first hand position. Lasting change comes from regular practice: a short daily self-session does more than an occasional long one.
